Polona’s best performance in Wimbledon; reaching 3rd round

Polona continues with great performances. Today she won in her second round match 6:7, 6:2, 6:2 over Varvara Lepchenko. “I have to say I’m really satisfied with the result, with the way I stayed on court mentally and was fighting even if I wasn’t playing my best tennis; my serve wasn’t really working that well.”

For the first time, Polona will play in the third round of Wimbledon. She has reached second round in 2011 and 2014 and third round of Roland Garros in 2010. “It’s great to achieve the best result so far in Wimbledon and to get to that third round, especially from the qualifying. I am going to enjoy this victory for now and then we will make plans for the next match.” Her next match will be on Saturday against Svetlana Kuznetsova.

1st round win in Wimbledon, next match on Thursday

In the 1st round of Wimbledon, Polona won 6:2, 6:1 over Annika Beck. In just over an hour of game time, Polona made 7 aces. In the 2nd round Polona will face Varvara Lepchenko (USA).

“I think I found a good rhythm today in my service games and I tried to take every opportunity on her service. I was really fighting hard and I stayed mentally strong on every point. Beck is a very consistent player, a good mover, so I had to break her rhythm.

I am starting to feel better and better on grass. It’s been a great experience so far here in Wimbledon. I’m really looking forward to the next match.”

Prvi krog Wimbledona v torek proti Anniki Beck

Wimbledon- second Grand Slam for Polona this year

Polona is already in London, where she will play her second Grand Slam tournament this year. It’s been almost a month since Roland Garros which was her first comeback tournament after being away for nine months due to injuries. In this time, she played many matches and won an ITF tournament in Italy (clay) and an exhibition tournament in Liverpool, UK (grass). Polona says she is getting in her old form but Wimbledon is always a special tournament since it is played on grass.
“I’m looking forward to play Wimbledon again. It’s going to be interesting to play on grass, I played an exhibition tournament last week so I got some practice on grass. I am going there with positive feelings and I’m hoping for the best results.”

Leaving Roland Garros with a good feeling

After not playing on tour for over nine months, it’s been a very emotional few days in Paris for Polona. Her first round win in the qualifying was a dream start even though she admitted she was more nervous than ever. In the second round, Zarina Diyas (KAZ) won 6:0, 6:3. However, Polona is leaving Paris with good feelings. Next for her a few smaller tournaments in Italy and Hungary.

Polona is back

After being away from the WTA tour for over 8 months due to injuries, Polona is finally back to professional tennis. Her first comeback tournamnet will be none other than Roland Garros.

Polona has some nice memories of this grand slam; in juniors category she won a doubles title (with Jessica Moore) and in singles reached her best GS result, which was third round in 2010. Polona’s goals for this years’ Roland Garros are a bit moe modest, especially since this will be her first tournament after not being on the tour for that long. In addition, due to lower ranking, Polona will have to play qualifications.

»I’m going to play my first tournament since August last year and it’s going to be Roland Garros, which is my favorite tournament. So, I’m really excited to be back on the court and competing in professional tennis. I’m just really excited to be back and I’m not expecting too much from myself because I know it’s going to take a lot of time to get back to the normal tournament rhytem and I’m just really happy and excited to play my first match.«

Polona back in school

After some time, Polona visited her high school Druga Gimnazija Maribor. This time not as a student, but as a special guest where she spoke to current students. At this event similar to Career Day she explained how she managed to finish her studies while being a professional athlete.

“It is a nice experience seeing these young students and being able to share my experiences with them.. They asked some very good questions and I hope my answers were useful for them and can help them on their path. I am always happy to be back at “Druga” and to see my professors that helped on the way, especially Renato Kuzman.”

Polona supported a charity project “Kalvarija 111”

Beba Scap, a Slovenian humanitarian, organized a charity event last week where she climbed the famous stairs onto Kalvarija hill 66 times in 24 hours. There are 454 stairs! Polona joined her as well.

The goal of the event was to raise money for young athletes coming from low income families. Many famous Slovenians joined Beba in her venture, including Polona. “I am happy to have joined Beba here. I like to participate in any charity event, especially those connected to sports and kids. We all come from different backgrounds and if I can help someone through this type of event, I am glad to help. As for Beba and her achievement … amazing. I do a lot of pre-season trainings here on these stairs, but never for 24 hours straight.”

Hard times are now behind me!

Hey guys,

i promised you that i will share more about my comeback to tennis courts. I’ve been away since the US Open (September), as i’ve been recovering from some injuries.  The past year, I was really unlucky/unfortunate with my health.

I had

  • Left scapula stress reaction
  • Left knee patella injury
  • Surgery of ruptured Meckel’s diverticulum on small intestine and removal of appendix
  • Right wrist tenosynovitis of extensor carpi radialis brevis and longus

I know…So these days, i am doing my best to get fit and to be ready to play on tour again as soon as possible. Since i couldn’t play any tournaments for 6 months, also my ranking dropped quite a bit. Of course, this is really sad for me. So, overall, i’ve had a very difficult year, and i really do appreciate  any support from you. Feel free to leave a comment or share this video. I promise i will keep updating you regularly on my way back to the WTA tour.

There are many positive things happening and I am really excited about the future and to play on tour again. Most importantly, i am now more motivated than ever and there is a great team around me that helps me get back. I will come back soon, and i will come back stronger.

Photos from press conference from maribor24.

Mr Ivan Gorjup, representative of Teniski Klub Branik (Tennis Club Branik), gave a nice welcome to Polona Hercog at a press conference as she became a new member of the club. Polona is also very excited about their cooperation and good practice conditions. “I always felt very good practicing here at home in Maribor. This is why I am really happy that together with Mr Gorjup we have started this cooperation. In this club I feel so “at home” and practicing in my hometown Maribor.

Due to injuries, her first tournamnet was qualifying for Roland Garros at the end of May. In June she won her 12th ITF title in Brescia, Italy. She was invited to Liverpool for an exhibition tournamnet on grass, which she also won. In Wimbledon she reached 3rd round of the main draw (through qualifying), which is her best result in Wimbledon.

Polona played at Olympic Games in Rio (Brazil).

Due to an injury, Polona had to finish the match after a first set against Angelique Kerber at the US Open. Polona did not play the rest of the year.

I’ve been recovering really well and most importantly – I had a great few weeks of preparation on and off the court, so I’m really happy to say I finally feel good again!
My first tournament will be Marrakech, Morocco, starting 21st of April! I can’t tell you how happy I am to be back and to be able to play tournaments again! Yaaaaay
After Morocco I’m planning to play in Portugal and Madrid or Rome.

Thank you for supporting me all the way through my injuries and difficult times!

Hey everyone!

I’m sorry you haven’t heard from me for a while, but it was a very difficult and complicated time for me, especially because of my injury.
I was struggling a lot after the Aussie Open, but now I’m back home and trying to use this time off the courts for the things I don’t have time for while I’m on tour. The doctors said I need to take some rest for a few weeks, then start with the physical preparation and then slowly tennis again. It’s very frustrating to have an injury after injury, but I always say everything happens for a reason. And I know when I’ll be back I’ll be so hungry for those victories!!
I turned 23 yesterday and I want to thank everyone for kind wishes, very nice of you. I spent my birthday with my family and it was amazing, so in a way – everything bad is good for something. :))
I’m planning on coming back in Indian Wells, which is in March. This time I really want to be 120% sure everything is perfect with my body.
I’ll keep you posted about my progress and will post some pictures in the next weeks.

Talk to you soon!

Hello again my dear fans, friends, supporters and sponsors!

Season 2013 has come to an end for me and I wanted to write a short blog about it.

First of all, to everyone – THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the support you have been giving me, not just this year, but through all the years. It is something that makes a huge difference in each day! Seeing and feeling that people believe in you is just one of the greatest gifts a tennis player can receive. For that I will be forever grateful.

As I mentioned a couple of times before, this season didn’t start as I was hoping, it started with an injury. The goal was to get back on track as soon as possible, reach the US Open main draw and slowly start climbing back towards the numbers on the ranking where I once already was. I think the way everything worked out at the end it was just great. I am very happy with the tennis I showed in Asia, especially in Beijing and am already looking forward to the preparation!

But first.. It is time to rest and heal my body and mind properly, get away from the courts for a couple of weeks and do all the things I’m not able to do during the season!
The most important one is spending time with my family and friends! I missed them so much, especially during the last two trips, US and Asia.

One of the brightest moments this year was that I had a chance to play doubles with Lisa Raymond. Unfortunately I got injured in Asia, so we couldn’t really finish the last two tournaments we played, but I definitely enjoy the time we’ve spent on court together – practice and especially matches!
She is a great champion and a true role model, that’s why I am very grateful for this opportunity.

I haven’t really decided yet where I will be doing my preparation for the next season, but I promise I will keep you updated.

I’ll write about my free time in the next weeks, so keep checking in on the news!!

Again, thank you very much everyone! For the support and kind messages!

Ciao ciao!!

Heyyyy everyone!!!

What…a…week!!!!! Olomouc was treating me very nice
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with the whole organization, staff, facilities, spectators… Of course it’s even better to walk out of the court as the winner of the tournament, but just in general the event is great!
Veryyyyyy happy with another title!! Thanks for all the support dear fans!

There’s not much time for celebration though, my next stop is Baku, another event that I’m visiting for the 1st time! It’s always nice to visit new places, meet new people and see other cultures. So I’m looking forward to it!!
First one on hard court as well, not much time for preparation but I’ll try to be as fit as possible for my 1st round match!

I will keep in touch with all of you!

Hey guys!

A little update on my schedule, practice etc.. I went back home after Wimbledon, took a few days off because I was really tired, but then we started practising 120% again!
A few days dedicated more to physical part combined with tennis and the last few days I spent a lot of hours on the tennis court and I love it!!!! The last couple of days I’ve been playing in Ljubljana – Drenov Gric :), just to change the location a little bit 🙂

The first tournament is coming next week and it’s hot and humid Palermooooo! I have a nice memory from there 2 years ago when I played the final and I have to say I really love to spend time in Italy! To practice my Italian as well! A presto ragazzi!! :))

The second tournament will be an ITF 100.000$ in Olomouc (CZE). Maybe you were wondering why I’m not playing Bastad this year, the reason is very simple and I’ll tell you because I got a lot of questions and emails on this subject.
As I was injured for around 7months in the last 12months my ranking dropped quite a lot. It is more difficult then to be placed directly in the main draw in this kind of tournaments (that’s why I also had to play qualifying in French Open and Wimbledon).
I entered Bastad with the wish to be able to play in the main draw, but I didn’t get in. So I asked the tournament for a Wild Card because I thought maybe I have a good chance to get it by winning the past two years. Unfortunately this was not the case and I didn’t get the wild card. I was very disappointed, buuuut I have another chance in Czech Republic and I’m looking forward to it!!

The third tournament will be Baku, hard court after a long long time! And my first time there as well, so it will be interesting for sure!

Anyway, that’s all for now and I’ll let you know about any updates or changes! I’ll also try to post a picture in the next days. But in the meantime here’s a little video for you! This time I wasn’t playing soccer during the breaks, I love basketball as well! 🙂

Talk to you soon 😉

Hey guys!!!

It wasn’t a very long stay for me in London, but that’s how it goes sometimes!
I’m happy I won my 1st match, but of course disappointed with the loss in the 2nd round. Especially because I had a looooooot of chances and that’s the most painful.. Petra is a good player though, she’s been ranked top 30 in the past and she obviously has some great qualities. She was better than me out there in the key moments, but as I said, I need situations like this – to be more relaxed next time it happens.

I’m going to take a few days off now until the end of the week, I need to recharge my batteries and start off fresh again next week! Back to clay again – starting with Palermo!

That’s it for now guys, talk to you soon!

Heyyyyyy everyone!!!

What a week!!!! Full of rain, battles, sweat and the best – a few good victories!!!
I would just like to say a few words about the whole tournament in Maribor.. It was great to play at home, all the people who are close to me could watch me live and what can be better than winning in your hometown??
Another good thing that I could get a few tough victories under my belt, which will give me more energy for the upcoming weeks!

I’m already packing my suitcases though, flying to Marseille tomorrow! New challengeeeeee!

Here’s a photo of me and runner-up Ana Konjuh.

Status update about my wrist

MRI again showed that a slight inflammation in the wrist is still present (area under the ligament). Obviously the soft tissue heals more slowly than others. Next examination will be in three weeks. Meanwhile I will continue with therapy and exercises in the gym. Important is to keep my physical fitness, so I can quickly return to the tour after the green light from the doctors.

I really miss tennis a lot, but it is clear that a premature return to playing could only worsen the situation. I hope I will able to have more optimistic news in the middle of March!

2017-04-05T23:41:50+00:00 February 24th, 2013|0 Comments

Anyone wants my racket?

I still can’t say anything relevant about my wrist. Next checkup is in the end of next week when it will be more clear when I’m returning to the tennis court’s. Of course I am not resting in this time but work hard with my fitness trainer! (In one of the next posts I maybe tell you more about him, so you meet the one, who makes sure I fall to bed every evening.) I have to be ready, as I will return to the tennis courts and tour right after a green light from the doctors.

But so we won’t get bored in the meantime, I have a bonus question for you. At the photo-shooting with my photographer Samo Vidic, this photo was shot. Try to find out, what is so special about this photo. I won’t give any more hints for now, so it won’t be too easy.

I will raffle off one of my rackets to someone who will write the right answer in the comments. The drawing will be open to all the answers that you post in the comment field below this post till Thursday!

Hello my dear fans!

I hope you are all doing great and I’m sorry for not writing earlier, but it has just been very busy with everything and I wanted to make sure I give you the right updates on my wrist.

I have recently come back from Australia, it was the WORST trip ever I can say. It was around 60 hours long, all the flights were cancelled in Frankfurt and it became a big chaos with the people waiting in lines, everyone getting a little nervous and I can say the airport is really not suited for this kind of situations.
Thank God I could take a train (or let’s say 4 trains, switching every station because of the delays etc hahaha) to finally come back home.

The Australian trip was not the best one, I am very disappointed with the way my wrist reacted to hard practice and then the match. It was just too painful for me to be able to play my forehand the way I’d like to play it. But let’s say this tournament is behind me and I’m just focused on the treatment of the injury, we are still waiting on some opinions from the specialist, what the best solution could be. I will let you know about the situation as soon as I know what’s really happening here.

As you already know, I’m very thankful for the support of my sponsors and one of them is Avantcar. They provide an amazing service so I can move around wherever I am, they have great cars and always very good options! Yesterday I went to pick up my car for this time and it’s a special one – Opel Ampera! It’s an electric car, of course when the battery runs out it switches to gas, but I will make sure I try to charge it whenever I can! It’s maybe a small help for the environment, but maybe we can all make a big difference in the future! Anyway, it’s a really great car, happy with it. 🙂 There’s a picture of it below. Just wave, if you see me anywhere 🙂

I’m still a little jet-lagged, but it’s very nice because I wake up early every day and I have more time to do all the things I need to do. It’s not always a bad thing 🙂

It’s been very frustrating with the injuries the last few months, so I need all your support and belief! We all need to stay strong and patient, I’m sure the good things will come soon, just have to be positive and determinate!

Wish you all the best and have a great end of January!

News from Australia

Unfortunately Polona’s wrist is not yet healed to the extent she could play tennis on the level the professional tennis demands. Polona’s disappointment is not directed to defeats she had on this year’s Grand Slam, but to the fact that she is again facing the consequences of the injury, which is not as innocent as it seemed. She will have additional medical examinations in Australia with specialists and after this more about next steps will be known.

Polona sincerely thanks to all her fans and people who stand by her side.

Hello my dear fans from Australia!

Another day is coming to an end and I have to say it was a very nice, relaxing one! It was a day off!
I woke up in the morning, got dressed in casual clothes for a change and took the transport to Melbourne Tennis Centre. I had a nice 1h massage in the official physio’s room, I have to say it was very painful but at the same time amazing, because I know I always feel so much better afterwards. Just when I was finishing the massage I heard an announcement in the speakers in the club that they have some typical Australian animals in the player’s area. It’s always so exciting to be around animals you can’t see every day. So I’m attaching some photos I took with a baby kangaroo and a cute koala! They were so sweet, I think they were a little scared with all the people standing around them, but I have to say it was a very nice experience!

After those nice moments with the animals I took a car back to the apartment where we stay and walked to the Chapel Street, which is one of the most alive places around here and the best thing is that it’s just 5min walk away.
There are a lot of restaurants, bars, shops, etc etc.. Decided to have sushi for lunch, it’s one of my favorite meals! After that I walked through the shops a little bit, bought a few things as it’s always nice to get some stuff that maybe you can’t find back at home. Also got some food for the apartment, mostly fruits which I looooooove :)) This time I got blueberries, raspberries and mango!

Back to tennis for a little bit, just to inform you if you haven’t seen it on Twitter or Facebook yet, I will be playing doubles in Melbourne with a French Open champion Francesca Schiavone from Italy. I’m looking forward to it, hopefully she can give me some good advice, she is very experienced!

The draw comes out tomorrow (Friday) so we will have more news then. I will keep you posted!

Greetings from hot Australia 🙂

Polona arrived to Melbourne

Polona successfully arrived to Melbourne where she and her coach Mattias continue the preparations for the first Grand Slam tournament of the season. The preparations take place on the scene where the tournament will happen in the next days. Considering the fact that Polona hasn’t played any serious tournament for a while she expects the tournament with much bigger desire. Polona is aware that this could cause some difficulties as she will not be in the competition rhythm as the majority of the players. However, she will play relaxed and with no pressure. But most of all, she hopes that the wrist injury she got during the preparation period has finally recovered fully.

Hellooooo everyone, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Hope you had some great time for the New Year’s eve, I sure did in the center of Ljubljana. It was a little strange being in Slovenia at this time of the year, I normally had all the 31st of December’s in New Zealand or Australia. But I have to say, it was great for a change!

Well, the party is finished and I’m back to hard work and more importantly – flying to Melbourne!!! I’m really looking forward on finishing this long trip to Down Under, it is never easy, but it is worth it. It’s one of my favourite places in the world, well, the ones that I’ve managed to visit so far.

Australian Open is in my opinion the best grand slam in the organization and well-being point of view for the players, so I always feel good there! Also it’s a nice climate change comparing to European winter, can’t wait to get some tan!

I’m really happy with the way the whole preparation went, we did a lot of hard work on and off the court (big thanks goes to Wellness Center MOJ FIT in Ljubljana for letting us use the gym and the equipment!) and I’m just looking forward for some matches already! I really miss the competition, the adrenaline, tricky situations during the match, the FIGHT!!! Two more weeks and I will be able to feel all of that again!

I wanted to thank Fila and Wilson for another great year, to AJM for their support, to Avantcar for making such a great service for me! I will be traveling for the next couple of days, but I will keep you updated on what’s happening in Melbourne! 🙂

Attached are some photos from the the New Year’s eve – preparations and later on rocking it with my partners in crime 🙂

All the best,

Hello, welcome to my new website!

As you probably already know I have extended my preparation period for another 10 days and I am flying directly to Melbourne right after the New Year’s. This is something new for me, as I always played some tournaments before the first Grand Slam of the year, but it is always good to try new things, to see what fits you best.

At the moment I am practising in Ljubljana. A couple of weeks of training here with my coach Mattias are behind me now, and before that we spent 3 weeks in Helsingborg – Sweden. I usually spent most of the weeks of the preparation in some place warm, but this time, because of a small problem with the wrist, I preferred to stay in Slovenia and heal it as fast as possible. This way I could spend much more time with my family and my doggy, so at the end it was great.

Basically I just wanted to wish you a welcome to the new website and let you know that I will be writing a blog regulary, to keep you posted about my career, my life, things that I like, things that I don’t like and many many more (I hope interesting) news for you!

New Season of Polona Hercog

Polona will began new season in Australia.
Because of small problems with the wrist and the loss of several valuable days during the preparatory time, her coach Mattias Arvidsson decided Polona will start playing at Grand Slam in Australia. Instead of a long journey to Auckland, she will have more benefit with a few extra days of training at home. After the new year Polona will travel to Australia to play at Grand Slam.
