2012 was one of the most difficult seasons for Polona as she faced with her first serious injury. This caused her to lose about 3 months. in the tennis courts and her rankings dropped. In July 2012, Hercog successfully defended the Swedish Open title by defeating Mathilde Johansson, 0–6 6–4 7–5.

Polona reached second round at two grand slams (Wimledon and French Open).

Polona played in second round at Wimbledon, French Open and US Open.

Second year in a row, Polona reached second round at 3 grand slams (Australia, Paris and New York).

At Roland Garros she lost in second round. This is her best result at GS in 2016.

Polona played at Olympic Games in Rio (Brazil).

 

Due to an injury, Polona had to finish the match after a first set against Angelique Kerber at the US Open. Polona did not play the rest of the year.

Due to injuries, Polona has not played since US Open 2016. Her expected return on tour is mid May.
